Provo River Today
#1
I hit the Lower Provo today and had some great success. I usually fish the blue ribbon section up near the dam, but today I decided to try new water. I parked at Nunn's Park and walked up the trail until I found a suitable location. I ended up finding a nice piece of water a little way's above Bridal Veil Falls. I walked down to the water, watched for a minute, and decided on a nymphing rig with a sow bug and zebra midge. No sooner had I set this up than the river started to boil with rising fish. (Of course) I assumed midges were hatching because I couldn't quite see what the fish were eating, and so I put my smallest midge dry on... and lost it in the tree behind me on my first back cast. I put my only other tiny midge on, cast out, and it was immediately swallowed by a hungry trout. I set the hook and.... my knot came loose and I reeled in empty tippet.

Cursing myself for being an amateur, I tied on a size 18 parachute adams and a size 22 jujubaetis dropper. I applied floatant across the tippet all the way to my dropper hoping it would ride just under the surface. I had great fishing for the next hour or so. I got about a dozen fish, most on the dry, but I got some on the dropper. I suspect that my dropper may have been bitten several times without me detecting it as two of the fish I caught on it were hooked as I was attempting pull my line in to cast again. Most fish were around 14 inches, but I could see some real hogs rising down there. I was never able to get to the big ones because I was casting into the wind and whenever I would walk close enough they would scare off. I guess they didn't get big by being stupid.

Anyways, it was a great day fishing. I'm glad I tried somewhere new out, and the best part about fishing that low is that there was not another angler in sight. Hopefully someone can benefit from my report. :-)
