The only real data available that I know of if from tournament results over the last few years.
Check out ultimatebassteams.com, Northern Utah division.
Weights went from over 15lbs for 5 fish down to just over 7. These are good to great fishermen who know how to target the big fish. That's a major drop caused by something. My experience on Deer Creek would indicate spearfishing is to blame. Obviously it's no more than opinion, but neither is anything else anyone has presented.
Unless the DWR wants to chime in on this (my guess is they don't) There's no "valid" study that can reinforce either argument.
What is telling, however, is the amount of states that have chosen to completely ban spearfishing for game fish.
Again, I'm not against anyone individually, so hopefully no one takes this stuff personally.
