Interesting, they worry about a kids toes, and dump Copper Sulfate in to control algae. Hey, if it's good enough for making batteries, why not!

Copper(II) sulfate is used in:
[ul][li]controlling the growth of algae in waterways, reservoirs, and swimming pools; [li]controlling molds and funguses (as a component of "Bordeaux mixture"); [li]providing dietary copper in animal feeds; [li]copper plating (depositing copper on metal) and electroforming (depositing copper on nonmetals); [li]dying and calico printing, as a mordant (fixative); [li]making [#23238e]Daniell cells[/#23238e], a type of battery popular in the 19th century; [li]synthesis of other compounds of copper; [li]crystallization of certain enzymes; [li]fertilizers, as a source of copper; [li]blue-green flame and firework colors; [/li][li][#005028]Known to cause Lock-Jaw in fish pursued by anglers[/#005028][/li][li][#005028]Turns "sissy"s BRIGHT blue in swimming pools containing Chlorine[/#005028][/li][/ul]
Copper sulfate's [#23238e]toxicity[/#23238e] has curtailed its use as an algaecide and fungicide. (In the 19th century it was actually used as a blue [#23238e]food coloring![/#23238e])

Rob - I added the appropriate letter-coloring as required by Rocky's law.
