The inlet at Stanley or Alturas can be good fishing. Lots of places along the river worth trying. Fourth of July lake is a fair drive in, then a 2 mile hike - bring LOTS of bug spray. Numbers of other lakes - check in at the little sports store in Stanley - they can tell you what's "on".
There's a few other turnoffs - can't remember the exact name - between Alturas and Stanley - if you can find pools and pockets, you're on it.
Have caught a few bows, kokes, bulls, squawfish. The fish hatchery is definitely worth a stop. Check the schedule, you can go by when they are unloading the weir.
