Darren,
I want an upriver fishery as much or more than anybody else. I can get there in half the time that it takes me to get to Riggins.
But it seems to me that you are letting emotion get in the way of logical thinking. I can admit though, that sometimes it's hard to use your head when your heart believes something so strongly.
They could close down the Lower Salmon 365 days a year. Wouldn't make a difference. The simple fact is that Pah and Saw fish aren't even showing up at Bonneville in the numbers that you think they are - let alone Lower Granite.
Rapid River releases 3 times as many fish as Pahsimeroi, and 2.5 times as many fish as Sawtooth, yet you think they have equal representation as returning adults at Lower Granite? I wish that was the case believe me, but it just ain't.
I don't like to blab about this on here since there are a lot of smart folks on here, and I don't even work in my field of study, but I did get a bachelors in fisheries and aquatic science from USU, and I can tell you that the mark/recapture methodology that they are using is tried and true. And I have no doubt that they are tagging as many as they need to, to get reasonable estimates.
Now when Sawtooth and Pahsimeroi start releasing 2,700,000 smolts every single year, then we'll be having a hoot in the ole backyard, and there won't be much left to complain about. [
