Honestly, I think the hole gets jacked up more by people breaking off big strings of mono than it does with braid. I hate seeing a good hole get fouled up by line as much or more than the next guy, but you got to admit, it's pretty much inevitable. You get enough ding dongs lobbing into a hole for long enough, and they'll fill it with line. I don't necessarily think it has to be that way but it sure seems to be.
Now in my opinion if you break off one of those big strings (mono OR braid), you were either being lazy or stupid (or both). Granted, it can happen to the best of us once in a great while. I go to some pretty extreme lengths to get back as much of my gear as possible when I get snagged up, and in 20 years of salmon and steelheading, I have broken off a good few super stringers of mono, but never broken off a super stringer of braid. But I do like to use my head for other things than slamming against brick walls. . . from time to time.
I seriously think all of the hoopin and hollerin about people ruining the hole with braid is waaaay over played. But that's just me.
It's just too bad that morons aren't as easy to identify at a glance as braided line. I'm getting pretty good at it though.
