Given that the area was an active gravel pit for quite some time I would guess there were some petroleum spills or leaks from heavy equipment from time to time as well. Unless they were properly mitigated the residual contamination could possibly pose a hazard as well if it were to leach back into the water. This guys property could really be exposing public waters and wildlife to some nasty stuff!
I can't imagine what it would cost to pump all of that water from his property and test the land to ensure it's safe for the water to be there for future generations. Who knows, maybe there was dumping of other chemicals there he was unaware of; it was an open gravel pit. Can he assure the public that no illegal dumping ever happened? This just brings up so many questions.......
