You can put a motor on a drift boat. I think most are rated for a 10 HP. Obviously you still have to register them like any power boat. I will tell you some drawbacks to a drift boat. First, the flat wide bottom makes a stable fishing platform, but there are no chines to track the boat when motoring around. Not a big deal you just have to work the tiller more to keep straight. Second, once again because of that flat bottom, they do not cut through waves at all and with any significant chop or wave it beats you up pretty good. Drift boats are very susceptible to wind drift. It does not take much to whip you around and so it is very important to double anchor when sitting. Drift boats are made for fishing and can be set up however you like. I have a fiberglass drift boat that I use for Stillwater and river fishing with my kids and have used it on places like Henry's lake. But, believe me when I say that on a big lake you are no match for strong winds with oars. A motor will help, but like others have said no matter what boat you pick the weather forecast is your biggest friend.
