Fish Stocking
As many know, the brook trout that are stocked in H
enrys Lake are reared at the Ashton Hatchery. This
sum-
mer, one of the main water lines to Ashton Hatchery
broke, jeopardizing the year’s supply of fish to s
tock.
As a result, many of the fish raised at Ashton were
stocked ahead of schedule, including some of the H
enrys
Lake brook trout. This occurred in mid-July, when w
ater temperatures were already in the mid 60’s whic
h is
warm for stocking trout. Staley’s
Spring, however was running at 55 de-
grees and could accommodate the fin-
gerlings. On July 10, we stocked
40,000 3-4 inch brook trout at Staley’s
spring. The rest of the brook trout were
held until fall, and were planted as 5-
inch fingerlings.
In late September, we stocked 755,000
3-4 inch Yellowstone cutthroat trout,
and 212,700 3-4 inch hybrid trout. Cut-
throat numbers were reduced from our
standard request of 1.3 million because
of the natural recruitment that is now
contributing to the fishery. We will
continue to adjust our stocking rates
based on natural recruitment and condi-
tion of adult fish, and hope to bring the
population back into a more balanced
state (more large fish) in the coming
years.
