No you are not missing anything. When they go, they just go, or rather not go. They just die, no warning.
I had the Maxxum for 7 years and mind you it was recalled, so seven years was a bonus. It sputtered then nothing. My old 36 just died after about 8 years of steady use.
Get the new one. Plus that one years warranty.
