Great questions Beavercreek. You are well on the path for properly releasing big trout. Below are a few things that I have learned over the years and hopefully some others will chime in. I am all about learning too.

Best technique I have seen for releasing big lakers from the deep is the Laker Saver that Jim Williams uses. No more "fizzing" fish or popping air bladders.

Few other tips is it is to use adequate tackle to land fish as quickly as possible. Always best to never take the fish out of the water. Remember to support the fish the full length of the body if you are going to lift it for pictures. Big fish can't be lifted and supported by the jaw alone. In my opinion, It is better to hold a fish against you with two hands than to have it flip out and pound the ice or the bottom of your boat.
