I live about three blocks from the Boise Cabela's. Sportsman's Warehouse is only about a mile or two away and I shop at both. Cabela's is pretty good to have as an option. Sometimes one store carries things the other does not, and ordering off the Cabela's site and having the items shipped to the store for free is nice.
Cabela's does have some great clearance deals. When the catalog turns over starting at the end of the year, they send the stuff they won't be carrying anymore or had a packaging/style change to the store and blow it out really cheap. You can find some amazing deals.
I got one of their Gore-Tex rainproof jackets and a pair of bibs for under $150 (combined) and a bunch of 300 yard spools of Nanofil for half price (came out to about $5 per spool after a mail-in rebate Berkley was offering). I also have a couple of their higher-end house brand rods that I really like. They usually have a 30% off fly tying materials sale which should be coming up pretty soon. Brings the price on some of the materials down to approximately what you would pay at the discount online retailers.
I don't get the accusation that they're too "corporate" or "they only want your money." Everyone I've encountered working for the store has been friendly and helpful. Many of them have been working there for years.
As for the location, I agree it's odd. But then again, Cabela's built their Puget Sound area store way the hell south of Tacoma. It's like an hour's drive from Seattle. Huge store (probably twice the size of the one in Boise) plopped in a teeny town halfway between Tacoma and Olympia.
