If you got allot of background apps running, run a malware / spyware program like adware or Malwarebytes. Also download a program called CCleaner and let it scan and delete all the temp files.
Also do a MSCONFIG, MSCONFIG allows you to disable items from starting when you start up your PC its not deleting them just stopping them from auto starting when you start in Windows.
In the Run box (Win XP) or Search box (Win7) type MSCONFIG and hit enter, click the tab that says Startup go down the list and start unchecking items your familiar with eg Adobe, Java ect ect if you not sure what it is don't uncheck it. click ok and restart.
