First Ill say I don't mind stirring the pot a bit.
Good to see Chris gets the angle I was taking. Let me restate I don't agree with pulling fish from redds. Some of the biggest browns I have come upon on the south fork I haven't been able to target for that very reason. It was fairly obvious that they were spawning and not staging. I can understand your carp comment too, I have a few buddies that target carp and cringe when its mentioned we went bowfishing for them.
To those that try and say catching them at one time is ok and other times aren't ok. Food for thought I have had the same conversation with some that believe that if we really were concerned for the long term salmon runs we wouldn't even allow them to be fished for after they leave the ocean since they argue that at that point they are into the migrating/spawning mode and any unnatural strain placed on them at that point jeopardizes the chance that they will make it all the way to the spawning grounds. Do I see their point? Yup. Do I think it's a bit extreme? Yup I do, but end of the day its their opinion and as long as they don't bash other fishermen for their desire to catch them on their way up the rivers than I wont bash them for their opinion.
To Mojo, those that know me can tell you that you're so far of base with your assumption that you couldn't eat all the crow in a month if you knew the truth. The point is that we justify targeting one species during their breeding time but scoff at others doing it for a species that we don't agree with them on. Personally Ive become less of a fan of late season cow hunts due to the fact a lot of those cows taken are preggers and you're not just taking one but two animals out of our already dwindling herds. But then again what would I know about elk and elk herds. I just called in my first bull at 9, and stuck my first cow with a bow at 12.
