I'll be the first to admit, I am not a trout guy. The trout I encounter through the ice are purely an accident while perch fishing. That being said, every trout I iced this winter, was caught with the aid of a flasher.
I'm from South Dakota, barely a year removed. I wouldn't even consider going out without my flasher. If I drove to the lake and realized I forgot to throw it in the truck, I'd drive back to get it long before I would attempt to fish without it. Suspending fish, especially, gills and crappies, would be nearly impossible to locate without electronics. Perch and walleyes can often be negative and the use of a flasher can allow you to refine your presentation to exactly what they want.
While I can't say that I'll live in Idaho for good, I'll say that you have an incredible fishery up at Cascade. The perch fishing back home is overall much better, but the really big ones (15+) are getting harder and harder to come by. The fishing pressure is enormous.
I still miss walleyes. [frown]
