It might not be a line issue, so much as a mate issue. When you get the fish to the boat, what are your actions? Harpoon? Tail rope? Gaff? Something!!! You can't expect to leader and hold that fish very long with 80 pound mono and tag line.
With that said, what brand of mono are you using? A quick search at Basspro or something equal and you can see the line diameters vs. the pound test for various different brands. Not all mono is created equal, that's for sure.
I don't see braid as an option for tuna either. I wouldn't use braid anyhow. The only advantage I could see even using it as a backing is gaining line capacity, because you still have to tie on the tag end and you need a long stretch of mono for shock resistance.
