+1 on the short rod suggestion by Ron. Don't let Cabelas fool you into needing a 12 foot eagle claw or ugly stik... espeically from a boat, and especially if you're in a kayak.
I've seen videos of people catching them on the Fraser in kayaks. I think it was even on some TV show on NBC sports network... extreme kayak fishing or whatever it was called. For bait, I prefer anything that's fresh and typically found in the river.
