Too Young?

I'm thinking of hitting some of the smaller waters from kickboats with my son who is 9yrs old. I'm wondering if this is too young, as is my wife, and would like some thoughts. Just so you know, he is big for 9yrs and the lakes we would be fishing would probably be called ponds most places...
