useful fishing vest items
#14
I forgot to mention, in my earlier reply, one other item I'm now giving strong thought to carrying -- at least have in my car.

On a recent trip, I jabbed a hook into one of my fingers. I tried to cut it out, but it was too deep. I tried to turn it to drive the barb back out so I could cut the barb off, but it was too close to the bone to do that. I'd read how you can loop some line around the curve of the hook, press the hook's eye down and give a sharp, hard jerk on the looped line, but I wasn't that sure how to do that and thought that must hurt like hell!!

I ended up going to the nearest town's emergency room. The doc there pulled a really neat trick. He took a 20 gauge hypodermic needle, ran it along side the hook, and covered the barb with the end of the needle. Everything came out as smooth as -- yeah, yeah, I can hear a bunch of you laughing and saying, "a barbless hook".

Maybe someday, I get good enough to go barbless, but I still lose too many with a barbed one.

Anyway, I plan to start carrying a 20 gauge needle in the car when I go fishing.
