Well I made it up to Owyhee, finally.
A bit of a fiasco though. I picked up my "day pass" for Oregon F&G Wednesday. Didn't notice they set it for wednesday instead of thursday, even after I told her Thursday twice, and confirmed thursday would be the 6th.
I went up and found a nice little cove on the river at 6am, plenty of nice browns working the topwater.
Grabbed my flypole, practiced untangling it from the weeds for a couple of hours. Then I grabbed my spinner, with my nice big Mepps red&white spinner. Slapped on a white minnow trailer, and bam, first cast, one almost tore of the minnow. Second cast, rock claimed my spinner. My only red & white spinner. They didn't like anything else I tried, and I tried my whole tacklebox.
So... Run up to the lake, switch everything over to the pontoon boat. Pull my lisc out of my wallet so I could leave my wallet in the truck. THAT is when I noticed the date. Back down to Owyhee store I go, to get a current lisc.
Back to the lake. As I'm launching I see a bunch of trout trolling the ramp, but a couple boats pull in right after me. So, I move off, to let them do their thing. Then some teen (who I suspect was only about 50% coherent, and maybe 75% mobile), stomps up and down the dock, yelling at the fish and throwing rocks at them. Then he jumps in and tries to swim with them.
So I move off even farther. Now the wind picks up, so I'm kicking constantly just to stay still. My anchor wouldn't reach.
I managed to locate a school of smallies. SMALL smallies. Same for the crappie. I caught quite a few fish, some even fought a bit. But non were over 6 inches. I glanced over, the kid is looks to be bathing himself by the dock. About this time I also notice that I'm bright red, in spite of my tan. Forgot the sunblock in the truck. Ugh.
So, back to the dock. Figured I'd try the river again after I load up on sunblock & snacks.
The river was PACKED with people! Ankle deep, waving flyrods. It's thursday, right??
And of course this reminded me of my morning adventure with the weed patch. So, I decided to pack it in for the day.
Got home, and my neighbors were loading up to hit the bass pond. So I ditched the pontoon, grabbed a sandwich and headed on down. Caught a few, but nothing exciting there either.
Don't get me wrong, it was a beautiful day. I just wish I hadn't bothered buying a fishing lisence for Oregon. Twice.
I talked to a few boaters at Owyhee, who all seemed to have the same luck as I did. Few, far between, and small.
(And yes, the boat launch is still in the water)
EDIT: And for some reason I can't do inline pics, LoL
