Thanks everyone for the help. Yeah I will start with a wooly bugger and prince nymph and go from there. I have a good tool kit that was a birthday present a few years ago. I just haven't had the interest in tying until now. I was just looking for ideas on basic materials to start with kind of like how a baker needs flour, eggs, butter and then can add other ingredients to make certain things. It sounds like most flies are fairly specific so the only common denominator is thread.
