I agree to ditch the detergent. Just very little mild soap is all you should need, if that. I just rinse mine with a soft cloth and warm water once in a while. No soap or cleanser. A few times a season I'll Gink the first few feet to keep it floating high. I'm using DT Orvis Wonderlines from a few years ago for trout. They were blowing them out dirt cheap over the winter, but not sure what, if any, are left.

Other tips: Make sure your reels have a smooth line guard. Try not to step on your line while fishing/wading. Try not to drag it over sharp rocks or hit rocks on your back cast. No sun screen. Really avoid Bug dope. Store in the shade. Dry it after each use.
