how to customize your downrigger release
#3
If you intend to stack (place two rods on one rigger) a slightly longer release line to the clip might be helpful but . . .

You really only want the release cords long enough so that you can reach them without taking the ball out of the water at the surface. A lot of guys without built in DR retrievers use a stick with a hook to grab the cord and release or reset your fishing line. The more stuff you put down there the easier it is to tangle so cords of more than 36" create their own set of problems.

I use the Big Scotty releases with the longer cords, 24", for every kind of fishing I do. You simply adjust the pinch of the line by how far you place the line into the jaws. I like the releases that clamp onto the down rigger cable rather than attaching to the ball so you can set them any way you like including putting 2 rods on one rigger and it allows for the weight to stay in the water when working with it. A ball above the surface will swing into the side of your boat with even the smallest wave. You don't want that happening!
