For me motor is everything. You can have a boat that looks like a piece and leaks, but if you have a good reliable motor that will get you out of any situation that what's important. I bought a 12.5 ft valco with 15 horse Johnson, with trailer, from the mid 80's for $600. My research valued at 1200-1500. My dads first boat motor was a B&G 7.5 horse and it worked like a charm. Only caution is wind and waves, smaller motors don't get you off dangerous waters very quickly. They ususally will not get a boat up on plane. Check to see if it has been ran enough to keep all the seals from going bad. If it is a motor that has sat for a long time they can go bad, but if motor isn't super old you can even purchase seal replacement kits. I bought that for my motor and it came with 15 different seals now she purrrrssssss like a kitten. Just my opinion which isn't worth much but based on the size of the motor I would try to get him to come down a little bit. I bought a 5 horse Johnson with six hours on it for $300 bucks, it was a 1985. I guess for the package I would be comfortable at more like $800 if the motor runs well. Don't know if that
you or helps.
