Not really sure what you two are referring to as ice flies.
Sure one can use jigs in fly fishing but in open water. Not a great choice for rivers.
There are special "jig" hooks made for fly fishing with many made without the use of lead.

Note the difference. A fly tying jig hook is about the same length as the matching nymph hook. You still tie a fly on the hook with fur, feathers, wire ans synthetics.
I tie my jigs in Pheasant Tails, Princes, Haresears, and Copper Johns and I use them when deep nymphing. My brother uses them ice fishing. I can cast them with a fly rod. On the larger ones, woolly buggers can be tied as well as Mohair Leeches.
The OP was talking about a fly swap, is that still what you all want to tie and do?
