Bucket Mouths in the Fall
#26
[cool]Haven't hit Powell for a couple of years. Used to do some guiding there back in the days when largemouth were king...and there were no smallies in the lake.

Used to be able to fill a boat with crappies to 3 pounds and lots of stripers over 15. But, I will settle for a wide open boil on 5 pounders any day. It is really a matter of timing. You have to be on the right part of the lake at the right time. They can be tearing it up one day and then you can't buy a hit the next. You really have to stay on top of the reports and be ready to move fast when the weather and the fish are both cooperating.

I haven't been staying on top of it, but the shad usually go deep when the water cools and the stripers follow...to 80 to 100 feet. Spooning them up from that depth is too much like work. I would wait until the spring fling...or definitely plan to be on the water anytime from the end of August to the middle of November next year...with October usually being oneof the best months...in my experience. All depends on weather and bait.

I have heard of those huge northerns under the ice at 11 mile. I guess it is not uncommon to be bringing up a trout and suddenly have a tug of war going with a big toothy critter that wants it more than you do.
