Modern fire suppresion efforts have created an unnatural build-up of fuel so that when it does burn, it burns big. Thanks for your insights and the link. There are a whole lot of people who think like you do. I can't even count the number of verbal comments I've heard from folks I've been talking with about the very same thing you're addressing here. It would have been next to impossible to get $55-million budgeted for forest mgmt. on the Salmon-Challis NF but, poof, $55-million apparently grows on trees--as long as they are on fire anyway. The money flows almost instantly in a case like that.
From my little perspective, something's wrong with that picture. But, hey, it's way beyond me and I'd rather be fishing!
