The last 3+ trips up north has been the same for Madison (not me). Pulling Smallies out of Striper boils. Not sure who is greedier. A Smallie or a Striper. Smallies certainly are not afraid to get into the mix and get their share of Threadfins when the Stripers get them spooled up and moving around that is for sure.
For the longest time I figured a Striper to be the most greedy/mean critter around till I started catching Smallies and see how they act. They are afraid of nothing! Bite your fingers, attack your leg/feet, stare at you when they are on the bed and not move, attack your bait with a vengeance when you disturb/get near their bed, etc, etc. I really love catching them. I just wish our Smallies grew a little faster and bigger. I would love to be able to catch a 5++ pound Smallie every now and then like they do up in mid north areas of the US verse 1.5 - 3 pounders.
