There is no wrong way to fish them. I have trolled them using lead core line of a weight. you can use a split shot or a action disk flasher when trolling. when fishing rivers just fish them as you would any streamer. on lakes your going to want to get them down.
Lots of people use a fly rod for trolling flys you may want to add some weight but consider a long leader if your floating line is a bright color
