What a great time I had. Although it was only fast and furious the last morning I was there. The first two hours were slow and then it got crazy. Up to that point I had caught only 5 fish, 5 if you can call a 4" chub a fish. Then WHAM! a fish hit hard and went deep into my backing. That was the fish I was looking for. Once it stopped, it came rushing back towards me or so I thought. I knew I couldn't reel fast enough to keep tension on it so I started stripping. No I didn't start taking off clothes. That would have been an ugly sight. It was soon obvious that the fish was off. Looking down I had backing and line all tangled up everywhere. Once I untangled the whole mess resolved and got the flies in ( I always fish with two flies ) they were tangled up. That was a rush, but also a disappointment. The very next cast I landed another and it went like that on the following 3 casts. 5 casts and five fish hooked. 7 more casts and I was 7 for 12 on fish. Some were dinkers, but they were fish. Over the next 1 hour caught 7 or 8 more, but I had to wonder just how big the fish was that I lost. It was the "WALTER" (On Golden Pond) I was looking for. I had to keep looking at my watch and calculating time because I had a lunch date with my two college children down in Rexburg at 2:00 PM and I still had to break down camp. Why is it that when you have to leave the lake on a calm morning that the fish happens to be the best fishing day ever? That was fine for me because my kids are MY KIDS. Avery, since we got blown off the lake on Tuesday I went and checked out an old fishing hole on the Outlet. The worse thing was I had left my rod at the camp thinking I was not going to want to fish there, I had come for the lunkers at Henry's. Well fish were hitting the surface everywhere and it took me back to the last time I had fished that hole 24 years ago. When I got back to the trailer and it was blowing 50 mph gusts. I ate and headed back to the Outlet. I had a blast and thinking next time I am over there I had better plan on fishing that section again. The last time I was there I was still a Panther Martin Guy. Flyfishing the Outlet was fun. I caught two 14 inchers, but there are bigger ones in there. 47 years ago I caught an 18 incher to have the biggest fish of the night and my avatar photo is a 21 incher out of the Outlet as well.Moose are the biggest scare of fishing that section, need I say more with the photo attached. The fly of choice of most the fish in that furious 1 1/2 hours was a tan mohair leech size 8 or 10. Over by the cliffs on Tuesday morning the fly of chioce was a dark green and black woolly bugger size 2. I caught a 4 and 2 three pounders that morning as well as some 17 inchers.
I had a lot of foul hooked fish in the four days I was there. Is that common? I am talking around 14 times.
