When I lived in northern Louisiana, we would occasionally go watch guys fishing for alligator gar in a canal. They used heavy spinning gear and on the end of their line, they put a 18" length of frayed nylon rope. The fishermen would work that rope like a streamer and when the fish hit, their teeth would get tangled in the nylon strands and they couldn't get loose. No hooks on their lines, just the frayed rope. Strangest fishing I ever witnessed.
