Wow - and I thought this post was going in such a positive direction, until now.
So if this is how you feel about things, I (1) don't know why you read at all (2) sure am glad you DON'T post more often, if that's the kind of mentality and attitude you have to share.
And you're from Utah, or at least a Jazz Fan?! Uh oh - bring out the Utah haters then! I can smell it coming, like a summer storm.
Forgive me - I'm generally one more toward keeping the peace, offering a squirrel rubdown once in a while even. Basically try to lighten things up, when tensions and opinions turn to attitudes and attacks.
But seriously - what would count as a "good post"? I am one who takes the time and effort to snap a few photos, and slap together a few words to share a day's venture. And I say SHARE, not brag. I've had reports on finding minnows, or schools of small panfish, to catching large cats and carp, even musky. Have I ever bragged on a post? Hell Yeah! Have I offered humility and embarrassment? Um - check that. Have I given away details of where, what and how? Sometimes. Have I withheld, or obscured details from the public on some spots I visit? Darn tootin!
Here's the deal - if someone is willing to take the time to take pictures/videos, bother to share any level of a trip - it's worthwhile for anyone reading to drop a simple note. A "hey thanks for the post" goes a long way to motivate a forum member to bother to put the effort in again. Is that about ego? Sure - why the heck not!!!
Have I taken the time/effort to put together posts and have over a 1000 views, and end up with maybe a response or two? Um - yeah - loads. Or the only response you get is some snippy picky crap about who knows what.
I could list the categories of things I've had posts "jumped on" for. "Fish too big, Fish to small, Too many fish, Too few fish, Too many words, Not enough words, Didn't tell what/where, Did tell what/where, held fish up bad. . . " You name it.
Take the time to look at the desert of some of the other state's forums. BFT started in Calif, but check their board, and there's a question, 3 years old, and not a single reply. If that's what people want out of a forum, then diss people who make posts, ignore the posts that are made, and put people down and start arguments over inane differences of opinion.
You want a forum that has contributors offering stories, information, pictures to enjoy, ideas on where/how to try something new/different - then post, make replies, be a contributor. I've met directly and indirectly a whole host of people because of BFT, and I think I'm a better angler for it. I sincerely hope that continues.
The moderators do what they can to keep the peace, keep it family friendly (keep in mind KIDS read the board - think about it, little kids too!!!), and control threads or users that get out of hand. Pretty thankless work.
But we've got a forum with some great members, folks of different backgrounds, different approaches to fishing, different areas we live/frequent. But the one thing is there's always something you can learn, and there's always something you can contribute. Just make it positive, and you'll get the like in return.
