That's a good suggestion about cutting the loop end and tying a new loop to shorten the length. Not sure why I never thought of it. Still will get a little more use out of a slightly shortened leader in tight spaces because I'm cheap and it works. But will add that to my approach on small streams.
I assume if I do shorten the butt section 6 inches this give a softer presentation versus using a leader that has only about 12 of the original 18 inches of terminal tippet material left after previous use.
