My son lives near Ft Lauderdale Florida so I spent a week there fishing every day. Tropical climate, had a bunch of lizards in the back yard as well as frogs.
I fished the piers, under bridges, off the jetty, along the banks of the canals. FISH WERE EVERYWHERE! I mainly fished for reef fish, not the big ones. I went out on a boat and only got a remora. See pic. The biggest fish were at the pier but most fisherman walked away empty handed. I saw very few large fish being taken from there and in general. We went to Isamadora down the southern keys and seen 20 - 100 lb tarpon being fed at the boat docks eating the scraps after the fish have been cleaned. I caught a wierd looking crab and an octopus as well. I mostly used my ice fishing pole and 8 lb line. I ended up catching more than anyone I had seen and used a size 8 hook.
I was under the impression that the snappers were larger than a foot, but not the case. You never know what your going to get.
Take a look at the remora pick stuck on the ceiling.
The guy next to me caught the 3 foot barracuda. It looks like it weighed 10 lbs. I saw 2 other barracudas about 3-4 feet long during that week.
