Braided line issue

I think I have more than 40 feet, its about 3/4 full on the spool, I just tied the line to a tree and walked it out and it was at least 40 ft. When I was testing it out all I had was a one of them big sinkers used for catfish. I wont be using many lures on this pole, itll mostly be catfishing so itll be nasty meat and stuff like that.
The reel is a Johnson 710b, its an older model.
