One thing a fisherman must remember is that all fishermen are not fishing for the same species on the same lake.
I have been on jordanelle many a time when guys bait fishing for trout on the bank have been set up in a prime smallmouth location. They havent caught a trout all day, and like glasseye said, they are out to far for the bass.
These fishermen may get upset that my boat is patrolling the shore lines and figure that I have the entire lake to fish, but as long as I am not disturbing thier fishing, why should they care?
Why is it such a big deal? You know, last summer I left the boat and float tube home in favor for some wade fishing on mantua. At the river mouth, there was a huge number of people fishing, tubers, boats, shore guys, and me out there in my waders, up to my chest in the water.
Now, I was pretty restricted in how far out I could get, but the float tubers could pretty much go anywhere they wanted. But, everyone fished within less than a casts distance from each other, all strangers, and not one person got annoyed, upset, or put out by the situation.
And why should they? Theres no law that says your favorite spot should be reserved for you. Theres no rule on who gets there first. And to say its polite and theres a code of ethics that is just respectful to allow other anglers to have thier space is fine, but have wouldnt it be more polite, more ethical, and more respectful to SHARE?
The future of angling depends on our ability to come together and work as a group. If that means letting a kid catch all your fish while you just watch, or having to spend a saturday being a bit more friendly so that others can enjoy the day as well, arent we all better off in the end?
