with out being able to see it, it makes me wonder if you have picked up a Surf Rod?
surf rods have handles about 2-3 past the reel for sticking in to the sand at the beach.
it may also be a trolling rod. the handle would be about a foot past the spool
Any rod that is used for salmon, carp, big cats, trolling or surf fishing should be able handle a stergeon.
posting photos will help to identify your rod at least experienced anglers can tell you for a fact if the rod is suitable for stergeon by the way it is built.
