Don't know much about the rod but the reel is up to the task. It's an older reel that's discontinued as far as I know but it is a good reel. I have had the pleasure of fishing with a great sturgeon fisherman on the Utah board (you may want to drop by the Utah board there are some great sturgeon fisherman there) here and he put us on some really big fish. The reel should be good although if your on really big sturgeon you may want to pay special attention to how the drag is set because those fish can fight!
It will be a back and forth on the drag for sure, to loose and they will likely throw your hook when they jump out of the water and to tight and you know how that goes.
