As for catching those big carp you speak of,they are really smart,I think they see your line,could be thats why they swim away.
Thinner line should do,try 6lb and see how they react,if not go to 4lb. look for signs on what they're feeding on, possible berry trees?,I heard plain white bread.I've caught them on berry clusters.Good Luck. P.S. Is this what your after.....
