overhand cast with a baitcaster

its a diawa exceler, I cranked up the magnets to almost max and then made the tension knob a little looser and no backlash problem at all and good distance. i just have a prob with technique on overhand, I cast it way to low almost into the ground when I first started, I get it a bit higher now but still somethin is wrong, might be my thumb position being in a bad spot and to hard to release it with overhand casts, side arm and pitching i picked up just fine but in tighter cover spots say for pineview, i definitely need to master overhand.
