That bottom one is confusing. The way it is made, when you strip, you would be pulling it right into the weeds and the weed gaurds look like they would be more problematic. What am I missing?
May as well just use a Simi-seal leech. [

You need to stop thinking trout and realize bass is a different ball game both in how you fish them and how they're built. This is a take on the jig style of fishing with conventional gear. If you look at those baits, the weed guards are situated in much the same orientation.

So yeah, you're pulling it through the weeds but the weed guard is exactly that -- a weed guard. It doesn't get hung up or "problematic". Look at the angle of the hook bend and the angle of the weedguards compared to the direction the fly/jig would be moving -- it's made to hit the weeds and deflect away from the hook point. Also, you don't really "strip" a jig like you would a wooley bugger. You jig a jig. I use a shorter stouter 8 or 9 wt rod with heavier line to facilitate this.
If you want to chat at the Expo, I'd be glad to give you my bass-on-the-fly schpeel. [
