For ice fishing the first year I tried it I didn't have many rods so I tied some line around a gatorade bottle and then wound it on. From there I would just let out some line and then set the bottle in the hole. when it bobs I would go set the hook. Worked great until the cat thought the ice fly was a toy and got caught. The gatorade bottle then chasing her around the house didn't help any either.
