Just to be clear, using live trout or any game fish for bait is illegal and punishable by law in Nevada. I know most of us know that, just clarifying for lurkers and casual forum readers.
While I agree that you can catch a big fish in clear conditions as you did, I do believe that rough conditions can increase your odds by reducing visibility and masking noise.
The river is small and very clear, much different than Lake Mead even though they are a part of the same river system.
Some believe that fish sense the inclement weather and will go into feeding mode to get them through..... somewhat like a bear preparing to hibernate during barren winter months.
All that said..... the only real secret to producing every time at willow is to only make a report when you catch one [
