It could be due to the cheaper model auger, but I suspect it is due to the drill not having enough torque. Could also be due to the auger being too big. What size is your auger? My auger is a 7 inch, but I don't believe my drill would turn an 8 inch.
It is my understanding that it takes a minimum of 550 in/lbs to run an auger on a drill. The Ridgid I use has 565, I think. Most, if not all of the others have less torque.
Sorry to hear about your drill. Can you get it replace under warranty?
