[cool] Hey there FlyFishingMoose, keep in mind that those recipes were collected from several different states. Therefore what works in one state may not work in another. I used to live in West Jordan and often fished the Jordan river because it was close to my house. My best success there in the Jordan was plain ole Velveeta cheese and occasionally I would use crawlers as well. Only the fish will determine for themselves what they actually are in the mood for.
Come visit SoCal some day. I can show you one lake where the fish like mackeral, another where they look more for a garlic and anchovy mix, and even another where they like to steal my power bait that was intended for the trout. All we can do is set the table for them. They will choose the menu item that is most pleasing to them.
From the info that I have gathered, people in different areas are catching them on Crawlers, flour and bacon grease dough balls, power bait, anchovies, mackeral, velveeta cheese, cream cheese, ivory soap chunks, bubble gum, sun ripened hardboiled eggs mixed with cheese, chicken livers, beef livers, processed ham and turkey slices, hot dogs, garlic and cheese scented marshmellows, carp meat, bass meat, shrimp paste mixed with flour, minnows, chad, and the individual recipes go on and on. There are even dozens and dozens of commercially packaged catfish baits as well.
So go ahead and set the table but let them choose from the vast menu. Hope you have some success. Remember, they will choose what they want and you are stuck with the rest of the leftovers. I will usually make up small batches at a time and only bring a small selection with me just to see what they like in that area. And I usually will bring nightcrawlers as a backup. Those are just like a juicy steak for them. Good Luck. and Bon Appetit!
