Hey Match T, sounds like you guys had a nice time up at Big Elk Creek Bay. You definitely caught a lake trout (mackinaw). A splake will have noticeable worm tracks called "vermiculations" on the upper back area. Also several years ago I had an Idaho Dept. F.& G. biologist tell me that lake trout spawn in Palasaides Reservoir. Thay have finally confirmed that so your fish may also be a wild one. Last year kokanee fishing in Big Elk Creek Bay was pretty good at times. The reason Big Elk Bay freezes up first is the water is shallower around twenty to 40 feet deep if I remember right. The main part of Palasaides Res. is down to 160 feet or deeper near the dam. It takes a number of weeks for the warmer (deeper)water to give up its trapped heat and cool down to a point where the surface will freeze. The same is true of Ririe Reservoir.
