well if you are going to fish for trout through the ice, you may want to get out your Holly Hobby kit and go out to the wood pile and grab a peice of kindling.
shopping list (parts list) [ul] [li]lath board 2 - 3 inches wide 7 - 11 inches long you can use a 1 1/2 inch diamiter tree branch if you dont have a wood pile [li]jig heads size #2 or larger [li]75 - 120 feet of 12 - 20 pound test line [li]bait (jig lure or minnow or pork rine)[/li][/ul]
with this you are going to need the following tools [ul] [li]sand paper (rough grade is fine, smoth if you want a polished peice of work) [li]eath inch drill with drilling device [li]small hand saw or electric grinder or pocket knife[/li][/ul]
Directions [ol] [li]cut your jiging rod to lenth [li]notch the ends with a U shaped natch at least 1/4 inch deap [li]drill one or two holes in the center of the board (if two drill about half inch apart [li]sand the entire board and make sure you shampher the holes with a pocket knife to be sure there are no sharp edges. [li](optional) you can engrave or wood burn a design and stain and polish at this point and allow to dry for a couple days. [li]thread the line through the hole (or holes) in the center of the board and tie a knot. and rap your line around the ends of the pole (hand jiger) [li]use a polimer knot and tie on your jig [/li][/ol]
you are going to fish anywhere form 40 to 120 feet deap for trout. on the bottom of the lake. this will be some sloe fishing for sure cause your bites will be far between at best.
being the avid angler that you are you will be able to build this set up at no cost with the terminal gear laying around your house, unless you dont have a jig head.
this sounds like a rustic apperatous, but be asured this is the prefered method to landing lakers in mid winter. you just pull up the line using the hand over hand method. this is where the light gloves and the muffler realy comes in handy.
attached is a picture of the setup
