Henrys Holiday Week
#26
The cots are critical to winter camping. Getting up off the ice is a must. If you had a thick enough pad I suppose you could camp on the ground, but the slush and stuff would make that really difficult. I just put a pad on my cot.

I have a heater that I leave on until we are ready to go to sleep then we turn off the heater and just bury into our mummy bags. I put one big hand warmer by my feet and another on my heart. The one on your heart tricks your mind into thinking you are really hot. Our sleeping bags are rated to -10 so we stay really comfortable until below zero. When I wake up in the morning I turn on the heater again while we get dressed and ready for fishing.

One key is to change into totally dry clothes before going to bed. Even sweat will make for a miserable night after the heater is turned off.
