That is the same "spawn sac" machine that I used while growing up in Michigan. Mine has tied thousands of spawn sacs. Its is was easier and neater than the little mesh squares that someone else mentioned. We always cured our own roe with salt, sugar and water. The eggs would become so hard it was difficult to pop them between your fingers and they lasted a long time in the water. We would keep them in baby food jars in the fridge and they would last for months. Good to see something that brought back great memories.
