I've done the same thing... only not having a label-maker, I've used REMOVABLE stickers, similar to these:

Then I use a black Sharpie (with the really fine point) and use a code like BTFC10 10/11 (Berkly Trilene Fluourocarbon 10# test and month/year-date). I place the label someplace out of the way (like on the bottom of the housing) so that I won't be wearing it off, but it's still easily visible without removing the reel from the rod.
Until I get a label-maker, this system works for ME! [
